The US port industry is expected to have a slower peak season than usual!
The container throughput of SC Ports in South Carolina decreased in August to 203169 TEUs and 111745 terminal containers, a decrease of 9% compared to the same month in 2022.
SC Port stated in a statement: "Due to declining consumer demand and a slowdown in the US economy, the US port industry is expected to have a slower peak season than usual
However, in the same month, the inland port of Greer set a new monthly record with 16857 railway shipments. This number represents the largest monthly change in the history of the port, with a 52% increase since August 2022.
In addition, Inland Port Dillon, located on the North Carolina border and serviced by CSX, also performed well this month. The inland port of Dilong handled 3439 railway shipments, an increase of 83% compared to the previous year.
Barbara Melvin, President and CEO of SC Ports, pointed out that "SC Ports' railway services to inland ports have created higher reliability, flexibility, and speed for our customers' supply chains," and added, "Our highly successful inland port network has strengthened the importance of providing near port railways to Charleston Port, and the new naval base multimodal transportation facility will be put into operation in 2025
In addition, SC Ports' vehicle business remained stable in August, with 17876 vehicles passing through Charleston Port, a year-on-year increase of 9%.
