The fifth largest container port in the United States has surpassed the 2 million TEU mark
The Port of Houston, the fifth largest container port in the United States, has surpassed the 2
million TEU mark at an unprecedented speed.
In the first six months of 2024, the Port of Houston processed 2098117 TEUs, a year-on-year
increase of 13% compared to the first half of last year, reaching double digits.
Specifically, the container freight volume passing through the Houston Port terminal in June
was 339157 TEUs, an increase of 7% compared to the same period in 2023.
Houston's strong economy plays a crucial role in the success of our container terminal. Roger
Guenther, Executive Director of the Port of Houston, said, "Driven by different industries such as
energy, manufacturing, technology, and population growth, the city's vibrant economic
landscape has driven growth in consumer demand and industrial activity
In June of this year, the port received an additional 6 rubber tire gantry (RTG) hybrid cranes,
making it the fourth of a total of 5 cranes delivered this year. Since December 2023, the Port of
Houston has acquired 26 new RTGs.
In addition, by the end of 2024, as Houston Port continues to make progress on its Houston Ship
Channel Expansion Project (commonly known as Project 11), 15000 TEU class new Panamax vessels
will be able to dock at Bayport.
In addition, the general cargo of multi-purpose facilities at Houston Port has decreased by 10% so
far this year, while steel imports in June increased by 2% year-on-year. In addition, plywood has
grown by 4215% so far this year, although the total amount is still relatively small at 45013 short tons.
The total tonnage of all facilities in Houston remains positive, with a 5% increase in the first half of
this year compared to 2023.
