Recently, MSC stated that as demand decreases, it will once again suspend its independently operated Asia Nordic Swan route for six consecutive weeks, from the 37th to 42nd weeks, until mid October.
Just last week, MSC announced a rotation change to Swan's shipping schedule, which includes additional stops at Felixstow in Northern Europe and some Asian ports being removed from the rotation. The 36th week of the adjusted Swan route is still planned to depart from Ningbo, China on September 7th by the "MSC Mirella" of 4931TEU.
The Swan route was restarted in June as an independent service outside of the 2M Alliance and Maersk partnership. However, MSC has been working hard to justify the additional capacity and has reduced the deployed vessel capacity from approximately 15000 TEU to a maximum of 6700 TEU.
Meanwhile, due to weak demand, its Asia Mediterranean Dragon service will be cancelled for three consecutive voyages in the 39th, 40th, and 41st weeks.
In fact, the latest issue of the Ningbo Container Freight Index (NCFI) commented that there is insufficient demand for European transportation, and liner companies choose to lower prices to solicit goods, resulting in a continuous decline in European freight rates.
In addition, according to the latest data from Deloitte, out of a total of 665 scheduled voyages on major trade routes across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Asia to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, 45 voyages were cancelled between the 36th week (September 4th to September 10th) and the 40th week (October 2nd to October 8th), with a cancellation rate of 7%.
During this period, 58% of the shutdowns will occur on the trans Pacific eastbound route, 24% on the Asia Nordic and Mediterranean routes, and 18% on the trans Atlantic westbound route.
Drury stated that as China's Golden Week approaches, shipping companies should adjust their capacity more significantly and suspend more voyages. The holiday is only one month away, and it is expected that the cancellation rate of east-west trade shutdowns will be around 7% in the next five weeks.
